Where? NYCComicon 2012 Who? Korra from The Legend of Korra Photography Credit: Blanko aka Gianna Rovelli (as the watermark stats) Model and fabrication: Me
Blanko is the best! She has taken numerous photos for me and her quality is superb!
Construction Details: (not all these are visible in this picture)
Coat: made out of a corduroy/cotton blend I believe, super comfortable! And lined with jersey. The trim on the sleeves was an added touch, found it randomly in my fave trimming store, you could probably make it out of a thick white trim and cut suede strips : ) Then the trim on the hood is a faux fur that is actually more gray than white, photographs white. The little emblem on the front was a wooden button that I glued a wooden circle to. The whole piece is then attached to a thin piece of white trimming and then to the coat collar to keep it hidden.
Shirt: Cotton/Spandex blend (much easier to work with than spandex! Less shiny and holds the shape) To get the collar to stand up I put a thick trim on the top, which was stiff and almost wirey. If you can’t find anything like it I suggest getting a thin horse hair and lining the inside ~ You can either use a white trim on top of it or white piping.
Pants: Stiff cotton. I based the pattern off of a pair of sweatpants to get the baggyness right. Make sure they go the whole way down to the ankles that way they poof over the boots. You can make the top of the pants either fitted and use a clasp, or a little wider and just have a draw string to pull them tight.
Boots: Got super lucky! They were on a super sale at DSW. The brand is RocketDog. Then I cut some more faux fur approx 4inches wide, length was 2 inches smaller than the circumference of the boot. Sewed the two sides together and placed them over the mouth of the boot.
Arm Guards: Suede and leather. Double layered so that it wouldn’t look flimsy. Then around it I used leather ties that you can find at any craft store in like… a huge pack for maybe 5 dollars?? Super handy.
Pouch: Suede and leather. The pouch took some time to get right, the back of the pouch is a flat semicircle and then the front is made of a crescent/triangular shape and gathered a little at the middle to make it pop out. Then held together with eyelets and more of those handy leather ties. In essence its a fanny pack
Small skirt: Polyester/cotton blend. Super smooth material! It looks like a loincloth in the drawings, but I decided to make it a skirt in the event I decided to take off the leather wrap… for whatever reason lol Its (2) wide pentagon shapes attached by a thin waistband with snap buttons, that way there is a slit on both sides that allow for movement. I doubled the fabric so that there was no wrong side. With the white trim, to avoid bunching used a zig-zag stitch.
Leather wrap: made this guy twice, but mostly for the color. Used suede instead of leather. Leather would have been a little stiff. To get the shape, its basically a wide triangle. Again used the faux fur to trim it. I didn’t want it to be bulky so the fur trim is only about an inch wide and then when folded over the hem still retains the body but isn’t too overwhelming. Then to pull the wrap together I attached a thin leather scrap on each side.
Ram horn accessory: made the shape with tinfoil and then placed model magic over it. You really should sand it down to get rid of the lumps and bumps, but I justified not using doing it for the “rustic” look. Then I took leather scraps 1-2in wide, and wrapped them over the ram horn and hot-glued in place. To attach, I used the ties on the leather wrap and wrapped them as well around the ram horn. And tada!
Hair: Used my natural hair for the front. Then bought hair wefts, sewed them onto a long leather strip and then wrapped it around my own ponytail to get the length. Instead of the hair beads she has, I wrapped my hair with light blue suede trimmings.
Make-up: Used a fountain slightly darker than my own, was already a little tan from the summer sun : > Then used a black liquid eyeliner to create a less-intense cat eye look (brown eyeliner works well too) and then used a mascara to make my eyebrows darker and thicker. I usually have two mascaras one for eyes and one for eyebrows lol
You look absolutely breathtaking in this shot. I love the little tweaks you made to her outfit, making it look more realistic. Amazing. I have a question though. I was wondering where you purchased the Faux fur for the hood. Im having the hardest time trying to find good fur for a cosplay im doing and this looks perfect. Anyways you look gorgeous and I love this so much I don't have enough words for it. Bravo girl.
I.... wow. Thank you. Really... it makes me smile overtime to hear someone embrace the direction I took this costume. It really does mean a lot. And I mean... Gianna captured the image. That girl has an amazing sense of composition
To answer your question! If you happen to live in or around the NYC area there is a store on 39th street I believe (or 38th...) between 7th and 8th avenue in midtown. Its a small store that has a bunch of furs fake and real. This one was a half pelt, fake fur. It was the display model, so it was cheaper... but their full pelts go for $60 & up I believe. I think this one was $25! And thats because it was the model and I almost didn't take it but they made an offer that was reasonable. A half really is a lot of fur lol I was able to make the Korra Hood, the trim on the leather wrap thing (twice) and boot covers! I still have a lot of fur left over. I'm headed down there this coming week for new costume supplies, I could get the name for you. Maybe they have an online business? : )
Your welcome. You deserve it Also I live no where near NY but I did finally find some fur that I think will work perfectly. Thanks so much for your help though.
HOLY crap. Your costume and portrayal are absolutely phenomenal... I-- I'm blown away. I LOVE the unique little tweaks and details to the design! Friggan awesome <333
;~; thank you so so much for that. I'm really glad that you like it. Its always a risk altering designs of beloved characters. But I feel with cosplay it can make the character seem more real. Really, thank you!! <3 <3
I think you just look like her but then in the real wordl you now O.o
